Kay....I noticed the lag online and also notice the lag when one answers her phone. I answer by saying my name and then they say, "Kathy Condon please." Grrrr. Yes, it is getting easier and easier to stand out if we do anything personal.

Thanks, John.....certainly looks like people are starting to get that they must do face-to-face networking for it proving to be more effective.

Sadly, for a medium designed to build personal connections, this is an example of how social media can sometimes be very impersonal. Great post.

Kathy, I agree 100%. A personal favorite (NOT) of mine is when someone makes a comment on my blog that says, "Great information! See my own blog at ________" Is that a thoughtful comment, or what?! Or a blogger who "thanks" you for your comment by sending out a one-size-fit-all "thank you for your comment." No, I don't feel special.

Today I was on an on-line store site and they invite you to "chat live with a representative." So I logged on and asked a question. I was told that my representative was Sara. "Sara" took an awfully long time to answer and the answer was sort of on my topic but didn't directly answer the question. So I rephrased the question and there was this looooooong pause and I got back another generic answer that was close but non-specific. It took me a while to realize that I was "talking" to a computer that answered me based on "key words."

This is what personal service has come down to in 2012. Bummer!

Thanks. For the first time in a long time, I am seeing a glimmer that people are figuring out that all the time they are spending on social media is not bringing the rewards they thought. I'm going to keep talking about the human touch, and comments like yours makes me believe it is even more important not to stop my efforts.

Nice post. Glad to see someone still values in-person communication. Seem like all you read about these days is social networking.

The video is a repeat of Morrie Schwartz's story. Both men had ALS and both appreciated the joy of a slow death so they could say good bye and hear final thoughts from people they loved. This was wonderful. Thanks for posting the link.

Good for you Elaine....looks like emails might be the only written records we have of our interactions. That is IF we continue to save them.
